Corpus is delighted by the appointment of Dr Michael Joseph, M.G. Brock Junior Research Fellow in History, as Cambridge’s first University Lecturer in Black British History.

Mike is a historian of the British and French Caribbean with a BA in History, MSc in the History of Science, Medicine and Technology, and DPhil in History from Oxford. He has published articles on gender, the military, and racial thought in the Caribbean and is currently working on a comparative study of anti-colonial political thought in the region circa 1884 to 1939.  His remit at Cambridge is to expand the teaching and supervision in Caribbean history, Black British history, and the history of the Black diaspora more broadly.

As Brock Junior Research Fellow in History at Corpus since October 2018, he has proved an excellent researcher, tutor and administrator. At a time when students have needed more support than usual, he has been an invaluable member of the History School.

On hearing the news John Watts, Professor of Late Medieval History, said: “Mike has made a huge contribution to Corpus History in his three years here – his wide and learned teaching, his kindness and generosity, his insightful comments on students’ work, and his total commitment to widening participation and supporting everyone to do their best.  He’s been a wonderful colleague and tutor, and we’ll really miss him.”
